HIGHLANDS, NJ — Highlands resident and U.S. Air Force veteran William “Bill” Tikiob Ward has finally received several long-overdue service medals for his heroic service during the Vietnam War, more than 50 years after earning them.

The medals were presented by Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. at a special ceremony held at Harold Daley VFW Post 1333 in Neptune, where Ward was joined by family, friends, and fellow veterans.

Ward, a lifelong New Jersey resident, enlisted in the Air Force in 1969 and served on active duty from 1970 to 1974, rising to the rank of sergeant. He completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas before being assigned to the 354th Supply Squadron at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base in South Carolina.

With only a few days’ notice, Ward’s squadron was deployed to Vietnam, where he worked as a fuels specialist, maintaining critical refueling operations under intense and often dangerous conditions. His work supported tactical aircraft such as the A-7D Corsair II and F-4 Phantom II, which were vital to U.S. missions in Southeast Asia.

For his service, Ward earned multiple commendations, including:

  • Air and Space Outstanding Unit Award with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster and “V” Device for Valor
  • Vietnam Service Medal
  • Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm
  • Air Force Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Leaf
  • National Defense Service Medal
  • Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal

Despite earning them decades ago, Ward never received the physical medals due to administrative delays. After reaching out to Congressman Pallone’s office, staff members worked with the Air Force Personnel Center and National Personnel Records Center to verify his service record and issue the long-overdue awards.

“I’m overjoyed to see this issue finally brought to fruition,” Ward said in a letter to the congressman’s office. “I can now raise my head proudly along with my fellow veterans who honorably served our country in defending its foreign allies at a time when it was extremely unpopular to wear a military uniform.”

Congressman Pallone praised Ward’s perseverance and service:

“Every veteran deserves to receive full recognition for their service. Mr. Ward served his country with honor, and I’m proud that our office was able to help him finally obtain these medals,” Pallone said.

As the Highlands community pauses to celebrate Veterans Day, Ward’s story is a powerful reminder that recognition for service may take time, but it’s never too late to honor those who sacrificed for our country.
