Rob Knox of Navesink Fitness | Atlantic Highlands NJ Fitness Spotlight

If you’ve spent any time around the Highlands or Navesink area, chances are you’ve heard of Rob Knox, owner of Navesink Fitness and a longtime figure in the local fitness community. A former competitor with decades of experience in training and coaching, Rob built his gym around a simple philosophy: stay consistent, stay humble, and focus on progress every day.

We caught up with Rob to talk about his athletic background, his bodybuilding competition days, and what makes Navesink Fitness one of the Jersey Shore’s most community-driven gyms.

You’ve been in the fitness world for quite some time. Can you share a bit about your background and what first got you into training and competition?

“I’ve been an athlete most of my life and played just about every sport our town of Manalapan offered — football, soccer, wrestling, and track & field. I went on to play football at Kean University, where I was a four-year starter.

I started working at a Powerhouse Gym in Freehold as a junior in high school back in 1987. I became a certified trainer a year later and have worked in gyms ever since.”

When did you decide to open Navesink Fitness, and what was your vision for the gym?

“In 1992, my father was burned out working in New York and wanted to do something different. He approached me about buying a small gym in Little Silver. How could I say no?

I started running the gym while finishing my last year of college football and quickly realized this was my life’s calling. The rest is history.

We moved the gym to Shrewsbury two years later, and then relocated to Navesink 25 years ago on May 1st.

My goal has always been to create a true neighborhood health club — a place open to all fitness levels where nobody feels judged. I want to share my knowledge of health and fitness with anyone who walks through the door.”

You competed in natural bodybuilding for years. What did that experience teach you?

“After football, I was looking for a new challenge, and drug-free natural bodybuilding gave me exactly that.

Unlike other sports, there are no days off. How you train and what you eat becomes everything. I wanted to see what it truly took to get into contest shape and push my body to another level.

I competed for over 10 years and placed in the top four in nearly every show except Nationals.

One thing I learned is that there are a lot of gimmicks and false promises in the fitness industry — not to mention steroids and dangerous shortcuts. I’ve trained thousands of people by focusing on sustainable habits that help them get in shape, stay in shape, and live healthier lives.

Helping people reach their goals without completely rewriting their lives has always been my top priority. I worry when I see people starving themselves or overtraining because that usually leads to injuries, burnout, and slower metabolism.

I think that honest approach is why I’ve been in business for 34 years and approaching 40 years in the fitness industry overall. No quick fixes or scam programs here.”

How would you describe the culture at Navesink Fitness?

“The culture here is friendly and welcoming to everyone.

We know our members by name, and for many people this gym feels like a second home — a place where they see friends, family, neighbors, and meet new people without feeling intimidated.

Some gyms in the area aren’t like that. That’s all I’ll say about that.”

How has the local fitness community changed over the years?

“When I first opened in 1992, there were hardly any gyms around here.

Now there are gyms of every size, boutique fitness studios, beach workout classes, wellness centers, and people constantly using the Henry Hudson Trail for walking, running, and biking.

This area has become extremely fitness-minded and continues to grow in that direction. Just look outside on any given day and you’ll see people out enjoying this beautiful area while staying active.”

For someone just starting out or trying to get back into shape, what advice would you give?

“Start slow and remember that recovery is everything.

The body never adapts well to being starved and constantly beaten down. Focus on balance and consistency, and your fitness goals are much more likely to become reality.

Better yet, stop by and let’s talk about YOUR goals. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach in this business.”
